My son was about 22 momths when we first used it in the pool in Hawaii. Of course as it is not a life vest, just a tool to teach swimming, we were with him and holding him at all times. The first few times he was in it, we definately had to hold him up and support him as he would have been face down if we had not. But it was really great to be able to teach him how to kick and paddle with his arms while having some buoyancy. We had to use it many times before he could hold himself upright. The package says it is used as a step by step tool to help teach kids how to swim. So if you use it as it was intended and teach them as you go, you will NOT be dissapointed with this product.We dont live in a place where we swim on a regular basis, but the we used it again about 6 weeks later and after the first day, he remembersd things and he was doing doggy paddle by himself and keeping his head up while staying upright....of course, we are still there with... Our son is almost 2-1/2. We had been taking him to weekly swim lessons for about 2 mos, prior to buying this. The swim lessons taught him each move separately, (kicking, blowing bubbles, reaching, etc.) It only took two times in the pool with the vest before he was able to put it all together and doggie paddle across the pool and back. I think it is a great teaching tool. I love that it allows him to safely practice holding his breath and going under too, and righting himself when his face does go under. It is all part of learning to get comfortable in the water and SWIM. I have used this with my three (now four) year-old son probably less than 20 times, including one week in the Caribbean, where it got the bulk of its use. To my knowledge, it has only been washed once or twice (on delicate), but it still has stretched out a lot in the shoulders. Also, my son needs floatie wings along with it, or he goes underwater immediately. My son is SMALL, barely toppping 30 pounds now, and this vest is still not sufficient to keep him fully afloat. If you have a swimmer who has some proficiency and just needs a little extra help, this may be OK. But, if your kids do not get in the water that often, this will not fully support them.
